Muesli is one of the most versatile foods and so easy to customize and top-up to suit the preferences of all members of the family. With excellent health and nutritional value muesli truly is and easy healthy breakfast.

Muesli is an easy healthy breakfast, and widely viewed as a very healthy food, particularly with the focus of modern nutritional science. Apart from being a breakfast food, muesli is often eaten as a snack or at other meal times because its so easy and convenient to simply add milk and gobble.

Most people simply add milk; however you can be quite adventurous with almond milk, coconut milk and toppings for muesli like Yoghurt, cream, fresh fruit, cinnamon, nuts, sultanas other seeds etc or any combination of the above. The ease of being able to customise a tasty and easy healthy breakfast is what makes it universally popular.

But, what kind of muesli should you eat. Muesli is a mixture of cereal grains dried fruits, seeds and nuts and there are many variations and combinations, such as our famous Bircher Muesli. We also carry a range of other Bircher Muesli products.

What is our definition of a good muesli?

Many Australians were first bombarded with muesli mixes made from bran. Yes, high in fibre, will definitely keep you regular, but golly, who wants to eat bran? even if you add fruit it’s hard to like. In recent years muesli mixes have become much more creative with nuts and seeds and dried fruits well as cereal grain.
At Plum Foods we have developed a range of muesli mixes that are based on organic rolled oats and pesticide free Australian almonds as well as other seeds and dried fruits. As far as vegetable foods are concerned, nuts and seeds are the richest in fibre after cereal grains. Oats is the king of cereal grains as far as nutrition goes.

Oats are an excellent source of plant fibre, especially beta-glucan, they are high in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Oats is the only source of a unique group of antioxidants called avenanthramides, which are believed to have protective effects against heart disease. Due to their excellent beneficial health effects, such as lowering blood sugar and cholesterol levels, Oats are also a very Low Gluten cereal that many coeliac patients can tolerate, so oats have gained considerable interest as a health food in the modern world.

Almonds are a great source of vitamin E, magnesium, copper, and are a high-quality protein source. Almonds also contain high levels of healthy unsaturated fatty acids plus a high level of bioactive molecules (such as phytosterols, fibre, phytosterols, vitamins, other minerals, and also antioxidants), all of which should help prevent cardiovascular disease.

So, we believe a good muesli should have a good balance of natural wholefood nutrition, fibre, vitamins minerals and antioxidants from a range of grains, nuts, (particularly Oats & Almonds), other seeds and dried fruits, but also should be tasty without being high in sugar.

Fibre is the indigestible part of plant foods. It is type of a carbohydrate that helps
keep our digestive systems healthy.
Better Muesli products are based on Oats although other grains are often included. Oats is a particularly good source of fibre making it a perfect weight loss food as it makes you feel fuller for longer. The fibre content helps in improving your bowel movements and prevents constipation and lowers the risks of Bowel Cancer. The fibre content from good grains like oats also makes muesli a heart healthy food as it helps in lowering cholesterol, and blood sugar levels, and so reduces the risk of heart diseases.

A Good Muesli gives you sustained energy

Since oaten based muesli is a rich source of carbohydrates it keeps your energy levels high. It is also a good source of long-term energy, because oats has a low glycaemic index. Foods with a low-GI value such as oats and Almonds are slowly digested and absorbed, causing a slower and smaller rise in blood sugar levels and a sustained energy boost.

Muesli is Rich in omega-3-fatty acids

Muesli made with almonds is a great source of omega-3-fatty acids. Omega-3-fatty acids are good for your eyesight, will give you a glowing skin, and strong beautiful hair. Omega-3-fatty acids will also protect you from heart diseases.

Muesli is Good for Diabetics and Pre-Diabetics

Muesli is well known as diabetes-friendly food. Because oats have a low glycaemic index, it can help maintain glucose levels. This can be beneficial for people with diabetes, who especially need to manage their blood sugar levels. Rolled Oats may reduce the amount of insulin that a patient needs. Oats can also lower cholesterol and promote heart health, which is important because diabetes patients are prone to heart disease. Regular rolled oats or oaten muesli may reduce the need for insulin injections.

Muesli is also known to control blood pressure levels and keeps hypertension under check. Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, like rolled oats, and low on saturated fat and cholesterol can lower your blood pressure if you have high blood pressure.

Muesli is Packed with iron

Iron is one of the most important minerals for our health. Oats alone contain 5mg per 100g of iron with almonds containing 3.7mg per 100g. Iron is essential to produce haemoglobin in blood and also prevents fatigue and tiredness.
